Springfield School, Kirkby, Liverpool



Springfield is a school for physically disabled children. It is in Kirkby but takes children from a wider geographical area.

With the help of Knowsley Library Service, I have obtained the following newspaper article from the January 28th 1977 Kirkby Reporter (it may take a while to download):

Poor quality black and white newspaper article about the toy library at Springfield School being established with a donation from the parent and teacher's association. The photograph is of the nursery class and shows six disabled children and three staff members, a teacher, physiotherapist (Sheila who has sadly died) and an Occupational Therapist.

School memories:

Sarah Jayne Davies pupil at Springfield from 1974 to 1986: lovely school dinners, especially the bread rolls we'd have with salad, cheese pie, and Manchester Tart. Assembly with Mr Turner or Mr Aspinal, a spell of high winds that made the glass pyramids on the hall roof to be unsafe, so we all had to eat in our class rooms. I also remember being in the nursery class listening to I am Sailing, presumably when Rod Stewart released it. When I was older, I also remember the nursery flooding and the younger children having to stay at home. Before the days of PCs & Macs, I used a typewriter for many of my school years and remember Sue & Joan in the office coming to my class when my typewriter had problems. I still have a typewriter now just for writing cheques and filling out forms, but now use word prediction software on both my Mac and PC, so often think back to the days before such technology was available. One of my favourite days in school was when my parents and Winnie Campbell would run the white elephant store at the Christmas Fayre when we'd have to keep pushing the tables forward because of people rushing to find things to buy! There was also a Springfield store on Kirkby market which I remember going to a few times.

Those sadly no longer with us but not forgotten:

Staff: Sheila Brown, physiotherapist, Winnie Campbell, nursery nurse. Pupils: Brian Linett, Jackie Hannah, Philip Boyce, Jackie Crozier and Donna Heyes.
